Well not long now before that big plump turkey is stuffed into the oven for roasting. Not long now before we pleasure in watching the kid's faces while ripping gift paper into shreds which envelops their Christmas presents. That right like it or not "it's not long now" as Christmas closes in fast. This shouldn't be a problem if you are prepared, having said that I have yet to meet someone that hasn't panicked at the last minute because they forgot something or other.
Christmas day should start as you mean to go on with the air filled with laughter. Ask dinner guests to come in fancy dress. Have a Xmas theme or one of your own choosing. For example: ask them to come dressed as their partner, man/woman and vice versa. Run a fancy dress competition on best dressed pop star. Have a karaoke machine so each person can give a rendition of their particular character to add to the fun. Below include a "couple" of my own personally made up games which I hope you enjoy playing.
Christmas is about tradition; however tradition can be seen as boring. Make this Christmas special and introduce different things into your day. Those invited will thank you for it. Familiar Christmas party games played over the years may not excite anymore. It is time for "change." Okay I agree pass the parcel or Santa whatever are fun games, but have you not decided on change. If pass the parcel stays as a Christmas activity then make it more rewarding for those less fortunate at this time. Ask players to make a contribution to enter a game (we only talk pennies so won`t break the bank.) When fun time is over have everyone gather round to see what was collected. Their donations will help fill the bellies that rumble and clothe the cold. Make Christmas day a charitable one.
Make Your Own Christmas Hat: Have a table laid out with brightly coloured crepe paper/card, glue, scissors, beads shiny tinsel, sticky tape, themed glittery motifs etc. Double up on tools so no one is waiting. Keep sharp instruments away from children and adults if drunk. Have a table with nibbles on to the side so those making hats can have a chin wag while jollying in this event. Make the hat game funnier. Ask a guest to write down on paper how they would like their hat to look e.g. colour, shape, and add on`s. Now give another guest this request to carry out but hand them a blank bit of paper. They have to guess what hat design has been requested. Points are awarded if any of the accessories on the hat match what was written on the slip of paper of the person they designed the hat for.
The Sandwich Game: Choose 4 people to compete. Have them wash their hands. In the middle of the room so all can see have a table with plates of different cuts of meat left over from dinner, sauces and garnish? Now blindfold each contestant. Number all plates. Supply each person with plastic cutlery and an apron. Have contestants call out a number and whatever meat graces that plate - have someone be their eyes and pass the plate to them to start making sandwiches. There is no set time on this game. As the host when you see enough sandwiches made to feed all later in the evening, stop the game and thank them for helping out. Sneaky I know but "funny clever" you must agree.
Cinderella Game: Although a time for season of goodwill not everyone see`s it that way and especially more so if they have to give up something, like their time. This game includes a party guest having to give up their time to wash dishes, make coffee for all or whatever you believe a good forfeit. No one wants to skivvy on Christmas day so it will be all systems go to win the game. To make it fair let us not have one Cinderella but several Cinders. Purchase special bingo tickets with the same numbers on 1-90. You be the caller. When the winning number is called all players will shout "house" at the same time, unknown to them at the beginning of the game each had the exact duplicate of each other's bingo ticket. Outcome: dishes disappear in a flash and coffee poured in no time at all.
