What could be worse for a girl other than splitting up from a boyfriend? Well, it's the time of menstruation; yes those dreaded monthly periods are what a vast majority of girls see as more upsetting than losing the man of their dreams. Menstruation is a time when a woman sees monthly bleeding (menstruating.)  Menstruation is also called menses, menstrual period, or period. Menstrual flow is not solely blood alone; in fact it is only part blood and the other tissue from the inside of the uterus. It flows from the uterus through the little opening in the cervix, and passes out through the vagina.  Why do we have periods, it seems pointless putting up with stomach cramps (period pains) and for what. Simply answered, menstruation is part of the menstrual cycle, which helps the female body prepare for pregnancy. A cycle starts on the first day of a period. The average menstrual cycle lasts 28 days but a cycle can run from 23 days to 35 days.

Periods we connect only to the vagina, this is not the case, other parts of the body involved in the menstrual cycle include the brain, pituitary gland, uterus and cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes. A woman`s body contains chemicals, and the ones we refer to are "hormones" which rise and drop during the month and make the menstrual cycle happen.

There are two main female hormones - estrogen and progesterone created from the ovaries.

Other hormones in relation to the menstrual cycle include follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone, made by the pituitary gland. If you have started your periods and worried then there is nothing to fear. Talk to your mom or GP so they can guide you about what to expect, and what is involved with periods. You need to be aware this is a natural body function that does not go away until the menopause. The only time you might see your periods stop is, if you have an eating disorder, and the more evidently is pregnancy. Towards the middle of the menstrual cycle, levels of estrogen increase and make the lining of the uterus grow and coagulate. In response to follicle-stimulating hormone, an egg in one of the ovaries begins to mature.  Of a typical 28-day cycle around day 14, in response to a rush of luteinizing hormone, the egg leaves the ovary (ovulation.) The egg passes through the fallopian tube to the uterus. Progesterone levels rise and organize the uterine lining for pregnancy. If a sperm cell fertilizes the egg it results in pregnancy. If the outcome is opposite and the egg not fertilized it either dissolves or absorbed into the body. If a woman avoids pregnancy at this time, estrogen and progesterone levels drop, and the thickened lining of the uterus is discarded during the period.

Although we speak of periods in a manner that has us believe they are pretty straight forward, well they are, but they do not come straight forward for some women. Problems can and do rise in menstruation like, pain, heavy bleeding, even missed periods. Dysmenorrhea - painful periods, include severe menstrual cramps. The hormone "prostaglandin" is accountable for the symptoms.
