Morning sickness - I am sorry to have to say this ladies but this is a pregnancy symptom that naturally affects most pregnant women. Although we have many signs and symptoms connected to the early months of pregnancy, it is morning sickness that is the most primary of all that we commonly know of. Some women luckily by pass this stage and never really experience the wretching/ baulking sessions (spewing their guts up) in the morning, but then and sadly we have them not so fortunate women, what do. In those early months many women become familiar and accept the changes happening to their body, and that just in general pregnant feeling. But when these changes make you feel bad and cause you to feel down, it is not nice.

Let us learn more about morning sickness and ways we can possibly ease the discomfort and lessen vomiting.

Morning sickness is a regular plague of pregnancy. The degree of sickness differs in each woman. Nausea or vomiting can happen at certain times in the day (morning or before bed.) Unfortunately for the women who find it an unbearable time are constantly ill and don't get relief till the first trimester is over or, medical intervention is sought. Nausea and its reason for happening is chiefly due to the rise in hormones and sugar imbalance as the body adjusts to the changes of pregnancy. As of yet we have no true answers to why one woman may suffer serious bouts of morning sickness, while others don`t

Medical experts believe morning sickness is more likely in pregnancies with more than one baby. The hormones are even more copious and the reactions are stronger. Women should monitor themselves and keep a record of how often they get sick (throw up) because they can become easily dehydrated if they vomit excessively. By keeping check you can show this to your doctor so they can determine if this is a serious matter or not and therefore suggest appropriate treatments or medication. Excessive vomiting could be "hyperemesis gravidarum," a condition that may need hospital treatment (IV fluids.) Although sickness in pregnancy is normal, too much is not, so see your GP or midwife.

There are several sorts of anti-sickness drugs that can be purchased or prescribed, however if your preferred treatment does not come via prescription then you need to get the advice of your doctor to okay your over the counter remedy. Never expose your unborn baby to any type of drugs, whether they be for medicinal purposes or not, it is not safe to till you get a second opinion.

If you find suffering from morning sickness is depressing you and would like to relieve and ease the experiences that are causing you to "hate" your pregnancy, yes girls it has been known, then let us look at ways and methods you can practice to calm your problem, and possibly prevent vomiting for you to get some comfort.

1) When you wake up lie in bed for a while and take your time rising from it. Speedy get ups can cause your equilibrium to go berserk making you sick. Nibble on a dry cracker as your body adjusts to being awake this will help keep acid levels down.

2) During the day, eat small amounts but frequent, about every 2 to 3 hours is good. Don`t let yourself get to the level of starving as this can upset the acid. Drink plenty of fluids, 8 to10 glasses of water, fruit juice or decaffeinated herbal tea each day. Resist the temptation to eat food containing a lot of fat or spices no matter how tasty they look. Eat dry crackers or toast. Ginger tablets can also help decrease nausea. Do things slowly, sudden movements can result in illness. After eating a meal sit upright, this will help keep the food from coming back up. If there are particular smells, that every time you are around and you find yourself baulking then avoid them at all costs. Smells can trigger nausea or vomiting.

3) Before retiring to blanket street (bed) eat a light snack such as a yogurt, bread, milk, cereal or a sandwich (Be careful of what you fill the sandwich with.) Nothing greasy or fatty or you will suffer for it after eating it. If you wake in the middle of the night, eat a cracker or have a snack to keep your belly full. We don`t want problem acid. Try sitting up in the bed propped up with pillows and wait 20 to 30 minutes before lying back down. Keep the bedroom window slightly open, enough to let a little fresh air in.

4) Acupuncture and Sea bands also have had great results for women having problems with morning sickness. Triggering the pressure points that encourage nausea can help settle the tummy. Acupuncture therapists can leave a pressure button in the ear that can be pressed on when ever nausea sneaks up. Sea Bands are worn on the wrist and trigger an anti-nausea point there. They have been widely used by pregnant women with good benefits. Once again you must not endorse any act suggested as treatment while pregnant, as it could harm you and your baby.

5) Emetrol is safe to use while pregnant and effective, but yet again because each woman and their pregnancy's differ check this out. Other medications such as Zantac or Pepcid are said to help, it also helps with acid reflux and heartburn that can be a source of nausea. Taking a combination of doxylamine and vitamin B6 is also safe and effective. Doxylamine can be found in the chemist/pharmacy as Unison Nighttime Sleep-Aid (only use the regular strength) and B6 can also be found there as well. Heartburn is common in pregnancy but you must never use Bi-carbonate of soda to rid it.

6) Prescription drugs - The most recognized medication for morning sickness are Compazine and Phenergan, and also the drug Tigan. They are safe and effective for taming vomiting bouts. Zofran controls nausea, originally designed for chemotherapy patients, once again effective.

What you have to remember is, "you are pregnant" and have "life" inside you, and you need to keep it this way. So regardless of the solutions above being described as "effective and safe," they still however should never be taken without your consulting your GP or midwife first. Yes I know most are prescriptive drugs and given to you by your doctor so why on earth would you need to get advice. Well it is known for other women while pregnant to share their medication. This is very unhealthy and dangerous indeed for both you and your unborn baby.
