Vaginal Itching - So you have an itchy vagina and here to look for a possible way to stop it, and hopefully find the cause of why it has occurred so you can help prevent it from happening again. Well join the queue because you are not on your own if your vagina is disturbingly itchy. Vaginal itching is quite common as like with the reasons for it happening also. I don`t think there are many women who suffer from this can honestly say, that they have never found them self in a situation where they were cut short and had no choice but to scratch the vagina regardless of where they were at the time. This can be extremely embarrassing if it happens regular when out socializing with friends or, waiting in a bus queue full of strangers. If this be you then it is understandable for your urgency to get to the root of the problem to rid the itch. The vagina and surrounding skin can become a very sore skin issue, if you're scratching has torn or scraped the flesh.
Let us look at Vaginitis more closely which means inflammation of the vagina. If you have vaginitis then this could be reason of your infection. If you see your vaginal discharge change in appearance e.g. smell, color or, experience a burning feeling in the vagina, discomfort when urinating or during sex then these are recognizable symptoms that we connect with vaginitis. Another vaginal infection which can be held accountable for an itchy vagina is thrush infection (fungus called Candida albicans.) Believe it or not even stress can encourage vaginal itching making your body more susceptible to infection. Also at the time of the menopause we see a drop in estrogen levels which can result in thinning of the vaginal wall and less lubrication which can cause an itch. This is where the doctor comes in; it is h/she that will have to determine which of the above causes give reason for your condition. Nothing can ever be ruled out until a medic has examined you because we have the "rare" vaginal/vulva itch which pin-worms are held responsible for. Pin-worms are parasites that we generally connect to affecting children.
To relieve and prevent itching of the vagina you should
Keep the genitals (vagina and anus) clean and dry. Use mild unscented soap and other that may contain irritants. Think cotton at all times for wearing around the genitals. Cotton panties are a safer bet than knickers made from synthetic materials. The genitals need breathing space and cotton gives this. After opening your bowels clean from the vagina back towards the anus. Yes we all know scratching gives instant relief, but it can also instantly worsen the problem. Please try to avoid scratching your vagina as it is not only unhealthy, but it can aggravate the condition. See your GP if you experience vaginal bleeding when not menstruating, or see swelling or have a presence of an unpleasant vaginal odor. A burning sensation when urinating or other urinary symptoms may be urinary tract infection.
Since it's not really acceptable to go around scratching your vagina in public, most have to settle for suffering in silence, or resorting to a little flexing of inner muscles in the hope that some relief can be had like that of doing the rumba on the spot.
There are several remedies out there to help relieve vaginal itching; however finding the right one may have you having to try different ones. Check with GP first before using unfamiliar products or taking medication.
1. Try Aloe Vera it is most effective for this issue. Apply fresh Aloe Vera juice to the affected area. You can use your fingers or better still and more hygienic is to soak a piece of cotton wool in the juice and apply it that way.
2. Alternately for vaginal itching, you can also use powdered Slippery Elm bark. More times found in herbal shops. Mix powder with water to form a paste and apply to the affected area.
3. Consider the yogurt tampon method. Dip the tampon into unsweetened yogurt and insert into the vagina. This is soothing and cooling.
4. Soak and relax in a vinegar sitz bath. Fill the bath half way with water and add a cup of apple cider vinegar. Sit in the bath spread eagled until the water has cooled.
Soak a tampon in Tea Tree oil if you prefer. You'll need to use an applicator tampon to make this easier. First coat the top half of the tampon in a lubricant of your choice, then add a few drops of Tea Tree oil to it, and insert the tampon. The lubricant was a suggestion merely for stopping the Tea Tree oil from soaking into the tampon. Over excessively scratching your vagina may cause you severe stress at times, however, you have to remember that stress may not end up being the problem if you do not get a second opinion on your selected course of treatment you have in mind, to treat the vaginal itch.
Did you know when you treat your own vaginal infection you rid vaginal odour at the same time.

Top-level comments on this article: (9 total)Does pubic hairs and hair remover cause an infection.Hi Nonny there is many things that can cause a vaginal infection. Things like hair remover is possble. Maybe not the actual product itself but how you use it and that it is one your skin is not allergic too. If you use a product as such, and it causes irritation then you tend to scratch. Scratching can have you tear the skin which would allow an opening for infection. And as for pubic hair I wouldn't say this does, however shaving the pubic region and ingrown hairs cannot be ruled out as possible causes also.Keep wellKacy
Hi im jhen, and im xpriencing ,itchy vaginal 4 days already. ,i keep on scratching it and its geting worse, wat should i do?Hi Jhen bathe the area with warm water and dab dry. Try not to wear underwear if possible to allow the area to get air. Avoid wearing tight clothes and do your best not to scratch as it will only irritate you more. If there is no improvement you could try some calamine lotion to cool the spot down which will help ease the itchiness. Other from this and the itch is not going I suggest you speak with your GP. It would also be good to ask the pharmasist is it alright to use calamine lotion, who may suggest something better to take away your discomfort.Keep wellKacy
Why does the itch get worse at night when im asleep than it does during the day?Hi Bongiwe you don't say much about what is your problem but if you refer to a rash, sometimes its because of WARMTH. The area might become more clammy causing itchiness in bed, having said that you need to know what you have to see if it is an issue known to itch more of a night. Try to avoid wearing underwear and nightclothes to allow the area to breathe to see if the itch eases. If the itch is getting you down go along to the chemist and pick up a cream for this type of matter to see if that helps. If not then see your GPKeep wellKacyThe tea tree oil works guys although I probably would place it inside your vagina as it would strip away ALL naturally occurring flora- here is a remedy that provides safe relief, immediate relief:Fill a clean cup with warm water and add a few drops of tea tree oil.Add a few cotton wool buds and soak them for half a minute.Using clean hands, wring out one and place it on the most irritated region outside of your vagina.Sigh in relief (optional)Throw away and repeat using next warm cotton wool ball.Try to avoid wiping excessively or scratching with the balls (I know it's tempting) as you may cause further damage to already irritated and sensitive skin. Thanks for sharing this Ange your time is much appreciatedKeep wellKacy
hello, i have been suffering from a yeast infection due to antibiotics and i scratched so much that i've cut myself and am bleeding...what should i do?Hi Krys stop worrying. I suggest you treat the cut like you would that if it were on your hand or leg. Bathe with warm water and if possible let air at it to allow the cut to heal. Its usual with cuts to expect a scab to form, still not to worry. Try not to scratch and if the itch becomes unbearable then rather than scratch squeeze a little but not to hard. If it doesn't heal call into the chemist or your doctor for a cream to speed up the curing process.Keep wellKacy
hi,My girl is 6 years old. Lately and occassionally I notice there is yellow stain on her panty. I can't tell if it is urine or discharge stain. Is this normal? She doesn't complain about itchiness at all.Hi - Its always best to check these things out as little girls can't talk for themselves. Yes it could likely be urine, but little girls can suffer thrush too. Can you not pop along to the chemist and have a word with the pharmacist. This way you will get to know what is causing this while at the same time get the proper medication if it is needed.Keep wellKacy
Is there any harm caused by wiping with a tissue with an alcohol of an itchy vagina?Hi to be honest if it were me I would not be using this for itch. You need to know what is causing the itch in the first place and treat the cause. An itchy vagina can be the result of irritaion or maybe infection. If it were infection then it would take more than an alcohol wipe to get rid of it. Pop along to your doctor or call into to speak with the phamasist in the chemist who will advise you on the best course of treatment for your symptonms

Hi,
I have read some of the tips to get rid of an itchy vagina...I would like to try tree tea oil however I am not sure where to purchase it. Is available in pharmacy or grocery stores ? I am located in the Philippines. ThanksHi – Visit a local body shop. I believe after talking to a friend of mine who has just recently got back from a holiday in the Philippines said she a saw a lot of tea tree oil for sale in the herbal shop. But I would still say the chemist or a shop with a pharmacy section would stock this. Hope you get what you are looking for
Keep well
KacyHi Kacy,
Thank you so much for the advice but II saw a lot of tea tree oil but they are under facial wash and facial toner form... not the concentrated oil alone... do you think its alright to use this tea tree oil facial wash as feminine wash?Hi I think it would pay you to walk into the store and ask questions to get an answer to this, as I wouldn't like to say if this is alright or not. Ask to talk to the herbalist, and its likely that you will find out more about your condition than anticipated. The expert on healing will naturally give you a summary on what is best effective to help clear your problem, but best of all may advise something other than tea tree oil as a better solution to treating you
