Bad Breath - What is the point of having a beautiful set of pearly whites (teeth) when the orifice that accommodates them smells unpleasant, and in some cases damn right nasty? Up close and personal is a situation you will not find yourself in too often if you suffer from bad breath, and is it any reason why. Put the shoe on the other foot and you have the answer why people do their best to avoid coming up close and having a chat, or worse still having to kiss you.
Many factors can cause bad breath but we look towards some things involved with the mouth itself for causing this.
Some particular mouth odors are considered to be fairly normal and not a health issue to be concerned about. One example is "morning mouth." Which is reasoned by changes in your mouth while you sleep? Throughout the day, saliva rinses away rotting food and smells. The human body makes little saliva in the night resulting in a dry mouth, and dead cells stick to the tongue and the inside of the cheeks. When bacteria use these cells to feed on, they produce an unpleasant smell.
Other causes of bad breath can be due to:
- Poor dental hygiene - not cleaning the teeth as recommended by the dentist, and improper brushing and flossing are more times the reason for bad breath. If proper cleaning is not practiced then bits of food rots inside the mouth. Decaying food stinks. Think of your dustbin to get a better picture of what happens in the mouth if food is left around.
- Mouth Infections - Periodontal (gum) disease
- Respiratory tract infections - Throat, sinus or lung infections
- Other agents - Chewing tobacco, garlic, onions, coffee, cigarette smoking, alcohol and other
- Dry mouth - Caused by salivary gland problems, medicines or "mouth breathing"
- Particular conditions that you wouldn`t dream could be the cause of bad breath, can actually cause it, for instance: diabetes, liver disease, kidney and lung disease, sinus and reflux disease are just a few to mention. Even certain psychiatric illnesses can contribute.
In some cases of bad breath it will take more than brushing with toothpaste 3 times a day to remedy the problem. Specific infections can be held accountable for this condition so instead of toothpaste, mouth wash and mouth fresheners we need to be taking antibiotics if under the orders of the dental surgeon or GP. To get rid of bad breath we need to know which type of infection it could be that is causing this and then treat accordingly.
Strep throat is a bacterial infection of the tissues sited in the rear of your throat (pharynx) and the adenoids or tonsils. It is a regular disease more than that of most other infections that affect the mouth in this way. A usual symptom of Strep throat is nasty smelling breath. If you have been diagnosed with this infection, it will be because your GP has maybe noticed inflamed throat tissues and you telling him/her of any irritation and you`re complaint of a sore throat. Other symptoms are a fever, difficulty and pain in swallowing. Particular sites of the throat and tonsils show yellow or white spots and swollen lymph nodes inside the neck.
Other conditions connected to bringing bad breath is Sinusitis and Nasal Polyps. With sinusitis we look to deal with mouth mucus
Mucus that we find in the mouth is made out of interlinked tiers of protein. When the mucus spreads over the rear of throat and tongue, it will generate a milieu that is oxygen free. This we refer to as post nasal drip which we hold responsible for bad breath in patients with sinusitis. Mucus becomes food for anaerobic bacteria, and from this it grows and masses, and the outcome of many bacteria is smell. Both mucus and bacteria can present odors. Nasal Polyps is swelling of tissue that is smothered in mucus. People with nasal polyps are not limited to having one. Because they block the passage it makes breathing difficult and sense of smell distant. There is nothing more discomforting than having a stuffy a nose. Adults can tend to their own ailments but children can`t. If your child has a stuffy nose, runny nose or whatever you see causing them uneasiness and distress then have the doctor look them over.
Aside from bad breath being one of the main dental concerns so is the problem of gum disease.
Gum disease (periodontal) is an infection of the tissues and bones that surround maintain and support the teeth. The two stages of gum disease are called gingivitis and periodontitis, gingivitis being the milder out of the two which affects only the gums, the tissue that surrounds the teeth. If periodontitis happens then this spreads under the gums damaging the tissues and bone that support the molars.
- Symptoms of Gingivitis are red swollen gums that bleed easily.
- Periodontitis results in the gums breaking away from the teeth, leaving an opening for germs (bacteria) to enter which destroy the bone that keeps the teeth in place. Other outcomes are – the gums shrink back from the teeth having the teeth appear longer. In the event of this teeth loosen and can fall out.
How can you prevent gum disease?
- Brush your teeth 3 times a day with fluoride toothpaste.
- Floss your teeth daily.
- Have regular dental checkups.
- Avoid tobacco.
