How many people are like me that never really take notice when out shopping at what products stand alongside each other on the supermarket shelves, or should I say, that don`t stand alongside each other. If you take note then you will see the way these crafty people work in getting us to part with our money. Have these bosses no consideration or compassion for the poor person`s purse/wallet, that I hasten to add is already feeling the pinch from the credit crunch. How much more can you bleed us dry? We mums are struggling as it is to put a loaf of bread on the table.

Let us look at the sneaky ways things are done in our local supermarkets and how the innocent become victim of their scheming.

Scheme 1 - Have you never noticed why milk is never stacked alongside the cornflakes and shredded wheat, or the strawberry jam and honey by the dough rolls and bread. The sneaky reason and a clever one at that I have to admit are because we have to walk further up and down each aisle to get our item compliments. Most sought after products will always be located in the furthest stretch of the supermarket. Aisle strolling will tempt you to pick up other products along the way that were not intended for the shopping basket.

Scheme 2 - You will find the more expensive items/products stacked at eye level because they make the most profit, clever eh, so next time you are in the supermarket focus on other parts of the shelf. Also it is best to have a rummage at the back of the shelf for products with longer use-by dates.

Scheme 3  - Also major leading supermarkets have allotted space for a cafe or restaurant. Their motive is they know smell, whether it is coffee wafts or that of bacon will encourage you to buy pig rashers and buy a jar of Brazilian. Tip – eat before you go shopping. This will be one in the eye for them if everyone did this.

Tips on how to keep you`re hard earned cash in your pocket.

  1. Big is not always the best deal. On my last visit to the supermarket a 200g jar of coffee was more expensive than buying 2 100g jars. Shop around for a bargain.
  2. Look out for items with yellow/red stickers on because these are used as indicators for staff to let them know that these particular labelled products are to be reduced in price. Even if you have to make a return visit to pick up a bargain it can save you a lot of money.
  3. Why pay for wrapping. We are coming close to Easter and chocolate eggs cost more than a bar of chocolate purely because of fancy packaging.

Next time you go shopping it will pay you to remember that supermarkets are out to make profit from you. You don`t get nothing for nothing in these places. Make up a shopping list before you go shopping this usually stops impulse buys. Manager's specials are not so special when they come in at extortionate prices.

Other money saving measures to be considered

  1. In the cold months keep all central heating radiators on in the house even if a room is not used, as a cold room will draw heat from the hot room resulting in you using more energy which means higher bills
  2. Little things like dusting light bulbs will help you hold onto the pennies. Light bulbs last longer without a coat of dust because they tend to overheat.
  3. How many people throw away cabbage or cauliflower stumps? If you grate them they make great crunchy fillings alongside grated onion in mayonnaise to make tasty coleslaw.
  4. Supermarkets own brands of shampoo are cheap and brilliant for washing your smalls. Swap laundry detergents for shampoo to wash delicate items of clothing.

Some useful advice below for the shopper who wants to save money on their next shopping trip – To be thrifty was once a personal choice, but now left with no choice, we have no choice but to shop with thrifty in mind. And looking at the state the country is in thrifty is with us for a long to come

If you go along to Morrison's or ASDA you will pay for the above grocery items £8.73

Sainsbury's - £9.56

Tesco - £9 58

Aldi - £10.18

And last but not least

Waitrose are charging - £13.91 for th same items.

You decide which supermarket you prefer to buy your groceries from and if the price list above is anything to go by then it is "daylight robbery" for what you get.

Why are these robbers allowed to get away with this? If the shoe were on the other foot and you quite innocently take a bar of chocolate without paying for it then you could end up behind bars. Sadly the work of these crafty beggars don`t innocently commit their crime which makes this whole scenario somewhat unforgiving when we the consumer have to beg for our supper so as to speak. C`mon what`s good for the goose and all that.
