Dry itchy scalp - There‘s nothing more embarrassing than having an itch on a part of the body that sends out all the wrong signals where people tend to back away from you. Need I spell it out as to what body part I refer too? Aside from genital itching we have head scratching, where once again most people's first thoughts are, is that you have "head lice," and no matter how hard you try to defend and explain this is not the case, these people still see you with a bell around your neck (unclean.) If you're certain your hair is not crawling with lice then there's a strong possibility the reason for scratching might be caused by a skin condition such as psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis. Both supposedly linked to yeast which encourages rapid skin growth. This causes a considerable amount of surplus skin to surface which prompts an overgrowth of organisms that causes itching.
To protect the scalp from drying up it needs the same care like other body parts. Without, what else can you expect than for the scalp to produce dry skin flakes?
The vast majority of people spoken to in regards to hair care believed washing/conditioning were all the hair needed. Hey guys haven't you missed something out. In a manner of speaking this is right but what about the scalp that the hair is rooted to. If the scalp is nourished then healthy hair is the outcome. Bad management of any hair care routine where scalp maintenance is ignored will leave hair dull and drab. It can also give rise to a dry itchy scalp developing.
Tend to the scalp's needs to achieve hair with a healthy bounce and radiant sheen. Today there are many products for hair problems so there's no need to put up with a dry itchy scalp.
When is the right time to seek help for your condition? Right away if it's serious. The quicker something is nipped in the bud betters the odds of treatment being successful.

Scalp conditions can turn seriously nasty if left without treatment. Some people suffering from a flaky itchy scalp have seen their problem worsen (hair thinning or falling out.)
Relief for symptoms
1. Soap can strip the scalp of essential oils resulting in dryness. Never substitute shampoo for soap. If you run out of shampoo don't be tempted to use soap, what's another day to wait to wash your hair? It is easier to wash the hair than treat it for other problems.
2. Best shampoo to use should be pH-balanced to prevent the scalp from becoming itchy, flaking or drying out. Look-out for one with a pH level between 4.5 and 5.5.
3. Ask your GP about Antihistamines which is common medication used for allergies. It includes anti-itching properties which help relieve discomfort. Regular brands are Benadryl and Chlor-Trimeton. An everyday dry itchy scalp treatment is called Baker's P and S Liquid. Purchase it from your local pharmacy. Application is easy just massage into the scalp and leave overnight. Get more penetrative strength from the solution by wearing a shower cap.
4. Heat some olive oil (warm) and apply with finger massage into the scalp and leave for 10 to 15 minutes and rinse out. This could take a couple of washes with it being oily. Olive oil is good for soothing.
If you're problem is not improving then call into see a dermatologist. Your scalp condition may not be as mild as you think and may need higher level of care if skin disease is present (Psoriasis.) If diagnosed with Psoriasis then treat problem areas using a coal-tar based shampoo. Inflammation is seen a lot with Psoriasis and a coal-tar based shampoo is effective for bringing swelling down while it goes to work on removing dead skin.
Hair care is vitally important to keep conditions under control. Did you know that particular products for sale in the shops actually cause scalp concerns. If the scalp comes in contact with specific chemicals, it can spark off an allergic reaction causing itchiness and inflammation. You need to avoid these products. Check what is good and bad for your hair (read product packaging.)
Scalp and healthy hair advice
A staggering 90% of products sold as scalp treatments cause the scalp and hair to suffer. One to name is Sodium Laureth/Lauryl Sulphate (SLS.) found in shampoos, and the scary thing is, it is more popularly renowned as an engine degreaser. Hair care is risky business if you don't know what you're doing, and more dangerous if unfamiliar products are used. SLS strips oil and prematurely ages the skin, can damage eye membranes and slows down hair follicle growth.
If you tend on dyeing your hair and want to avoid scalp itchiness/dryness then have an expert do the coloring for you to assure this. Certain hair dyes contain para-phenylenediamine, a chemical known for causing blistering and bringing itch. A skin test should be done beforehand when using new products. If your head is extremely itchy after it's been permed avoid glyceryl thioglycolate, a perm activator and common irritant.
