What is cellulite? Cellulite is pockets of trapped fat which cause dimpling in the skin. It is a much suffered common condition that women on a wide scale wish to remove. Dimpling appears uneven, patchy and downright "ugly" as these so called dimple skinned women claim. Depending on severity of the cellulite, (mild or severe) opinions do however differ. But looking at statistics in relation to these opinions the vast majority of women agree to cellulite being an eyesore, a turn off, and agreed upon as downright ugly. Women don't want to be ugly, its beauty they yearn for. So that's why we have cosmetics, makeup and treatments to help them accomplish this.

Although commonly seen in women, not so in men. 90% of post-adolescent women see cellulite at some time. Popular body sites for seeing cellulite are the thighs, buttocks and the abdomen.  Below the dermis and epidermis are three certain layers of fat. Cellulite is more likely to build up in the subcutaneous fat layers. This layer of fat is original in its edifice in comparison to other layers because its fatty parts are prepared into certain compartments by strands of connected tissue around it. Hormones also assist with the storage of fat along with the body's metabolism in the subcutaneous fat layer.

Estrogen and folliculine can be held accountable for cellulite structure. We see cellulite occurring around the time of the menopause, puberty and pregnancy in women. Why this is, is because women are experiencing hormonal change at these sensitive times. Birth control pills have also been named as a likely cause. Female hormones are normally blamed for regulation of their blood flow, fat, connective tissue and lymphatic drainage. The fat cells located in the middle of the two reserve fat layers positioned below the subcutaneous fat layer dissolve into a loose network. People's genetic structure foretells their fat storage and metabolism in these particular layers which are influenced by diet, exercise and lifestyle, but are not held liable for cellulite happening.

Daily exercise and eating healthy foods as suggested by health experts do help prevent many things; however with cellulite, a well balanced diet and a regular exercise regime will not reverse, and is not a full proof remedy for preventing formation. Nonetheless both should be adhered to as they both help people keep fit and the body in healthy shape.  Living an unhealthy lifestyle can worsen the problem.

As we grow old the skin suffers losing thickness and tone of the connective tissue in the superficial fat layer and the dermis. As result of this it is common to see flabby cellulite.  Not a pretty sight but that's life, and we have to learn to live with it, because it is not really something at this stage that can be rid with creams or other. You mustn't be duped into buying cellulite products that claim to do this. Not all deliver their promise of positive results. Although topical treatments may sound affective, they are not. Remember when looking for treatments to treat your cellulite is that your skin is a live organ!  So what you wouldn't' pop in your mouth you should avoid using it on the skin. You could call in and speak with your local herbalist about creams made up of herbs, antioxidants, minerals and vitamins. Natural products are by far your best bet to treat cellulite as there are no severe comebacks from harsh ingredients like them contained in some products sold over the chemist counter. Herbal solutions help soften the skin leaving it healthy and smooth.

If you are going to purchase creams then look towards specially formulated ones containing antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Products as such are more effective as they stimulate blood flow. More times than not if you look closely at your cellulite it may appear dry and damaged, therefore in vital need of moisture, increased blood supply and protection.  To see a difference or signs of improvement of your cellulite, treatment needs to penetrate the skin – working on the inside as well as the outside. Of course we have the option of cosmetic surgery to reduce cellulite but before going down this road think of the risks. All types of surgery pose risks to one's health. Ask your self is your cellulite so bad you need a knife to rid it.

Below are some home remedies; however you must never practice with the unfamiliar without getting advice from your GP first.

1. Take caffeinated coffee, grind it into dust and mix with hand cream, rub this into dimpled spots for one minute every a day, then rinse it off. Follow this by massaging into the skin cocoa butter, vitamin E collagen lotion or oil to help soften it.

2. Try Nivea cream, some women swear by this for treating their skin affected by cellulite.

Temporary solutions:

3. Tanning: doesn't make the bumps smaller, but they're less noticeable;  Not a an option I would recommend due to the dangers involved using sun beds and sun lamps strongly linked to skin cancer.

4. Exfoliate the skin followed by moisturizing with sesame oil which is supposedly said to help

Help control cellulite

Coffee grounds, 1-2 tbsp oil (olive, sesame or apricot), pinch of salt and cayenne pepper, a couple of dashes of cinnamon and honey. The caffeine in coffee tightens and firms the skin, the grounds promote circulation to the area, the cinnamon and cayenne draw blood to the surface encouraging circulation to the skin, the honey disinfects and the oil naturally moisturizes and keeps the skin supple and soft.

Causes for cellulite include

There is no instant solution for removing cellulite, as with most skin conditions it takes time to see a result of your hard work. Remember that it is pointless trying to rid cellulite when you may be contributing to its occurrence. You need to avoid particular causes of which you do have control over for treatments to work.
