Smelly Vagina - Bad Vaginal Odor & Infections - It's Normal If The Vagina Smells Like this?

Why would women with a smelly vagina want to change that scent to another that is deemed anything but natural? The vagina has its own unique distinct odor that's supposedly a big turn on for the opposite sex. If your intentions involve swapping natural for unnatural, then not only is this unhealthy and dangerous, but a disappointment for them looking to be turned on. Going mad with a spray bottle filled with scent, or fragranced mist on a sensitive area as such, is not ideal. Okay so you have a smelly vagina and want rid of the bad vaginal odor, what girl wouldn't, but you have to be sensible in your approach on the matter. If you heard some of the silly things some girls get up to in an attempt to rid vaginal odor would have your hair stand on end.

What we mean by sensible is, is to protect you're self from harm, that's right harm. Unaware, but known, women cause themselves unnecessary complications and pain through treating something they haven't got. Although a slight odor is normal, normal only counts to a certain extent. If the smell is pungent and foul then it's not classed as normal. Staying on the matter of normal, and to let girls know that it is not them that is "abnormal," only the genital scent.

We have lots of girls ask what the best vaginal odor treatments are. Unfortunately this has no immediate answer, that is, until the cause for the smell is determined first.  An odor "can't" be treated, but the cause that encouraged it can, and when cured it takes the smell with it. Odor is the result of a cause so it is this we need to look for the appropriate treatment. Aside from the most likely reason for vaginal odor "poor hygiene," the more common are "vaginal infections." Although poor hygiene is mentioned this does not indicate you're dirty and that you don't wash your bits, it simply means maybe not enough washes are done, or that whatever wash is done was not thorough enough.

Now you know you can be rid of your bad vaginal odor, you can come out of hiding. The amount of women that shy away from society because of this is quite alarming. Remember, the vagina makes interesting girlie gossip, and male chit chat too…some serious, and some funny. Why not join one of the thousands of health discussion groups online where you can converse with other girls about each other's experiences. You can learn a lot from another's suffering, sad I know, but that's life. If you think you're the sole sufferer of a smelly vagina then proof comes to the fore when listening to other women plights.

Let us assume it is a vaginal infection causing the unpleasant genital smell. Making assumptions like I am about to do is not to be practiced by you. Whatever health issue you might have, let you're GP clarify the condition.

Before infections, primary contributors of vaginal odor may include sweat, menstruation debris or stale urine. If the smell is a result of any of these then the vagina needs nothing more than thorough cleansing and pubic hair too. Pubic hair acts like a magnet to all sorts of nasties like cling on yucky gunge which can't be seen, which makes it more the reason for a good wash or two. If cling on's remain and become tangled and trapped then smell will occur. Trim pubic hair if necessary as this encourages matting, making removal of germy matter more difficult to rid.

Vaginal infections

Remember a vaginal itch doesn't necessarily mean you have an infection, however have it checked out to make sure.

Bacterial vaginosis is the vaginal infection linked to the fishy odor. It is caused by too much bacteria. Primary symptom is vaginal discharge which looks greyish white. Medicines may vary to suit different stages of most infections. Usual treatment for BV is a 3 to 7 day prescription of Cleocin 2% (vaginal cream,) or antibiotics taken by mouth. Sometimes medication is not needed as BV symptoms resolve on their own because the vaginal lactobacilli organisms increase to their normal levels and other bacteria levels drop. If a woman is pregnant and suffering an episode of bacterial vaginosis it can cause preterm labor.

Bacterial vaginosis treatment options vary on the principles used to counteract the infection. We have first and foremost the familiar tea tree oil-based products that reduce bacteria, said products capitalizing on the anecdotal and scientific proof pointing to the oil as possessing antiseptic and antifungal properties. Then we have specific products that lower the pH level of the vagina by adding an acidic buffer.  This is because the vagina's usual pH level in maturity is low - approx 4 - which is greatly acidic. Restoration of this acidic level is vitally important because it helps keep the vagina safe from harmful infections like BV.

Then there is the choice of products consisting of lactic bacteria.  This is based on the principle that lactobacilli, otherwise referred to as "harmful bacteria", helps stop infections.  Basically, this is linked to the principle of the second type of products because the vagina's normal acidic milieu encourages lactobacilli growth.

As mentioned above about antibiotics there are two sorts, metronidazole (oral form or as a topical vaginal cream/gel.) Metrodinazole is recognized for side effects. If taken by mouth then allergic reactions, headaches, giddiness, and nausea are common discomforts. Although the purpose is to clear infection the gel form, may cause yeast vaginitis.

Help prevent bacterial vaginosis by taking vitamins which contain antioxidants A, C, D and E and B complex, as they are better for this purpose.  If itchiness is a problem use topical applications containing vitamin E. Usually vitamin E content is found in creams or powdered capsules.

It is best to try and prevent something than having to try and correct it. This applies to vaginal infections. Avoid yeasty foods which organisms thrive on. Foods such as cheese, beer, chocolate, soy sauce, sugar and vinegar are a few to name.

1. If the vagina/vulva or anus feels irritated have a long soak in a warm bath (no bubbly stuff or scented soaps.) Specific soaps can damage the skin's natural oils that act as the body's natural lipid barriers.

2. If there is vaginal inflammation and itchiness make a cold compress and treat infected area. The cold compress persuades blood vessels to taper which helps reduce reddening and swelling.

3. Apply yogurt to the vagina and leave for about 20 minutes do this 3 times daily for best results. This is effective for taking care of any surface stick as well as surface bacteria.

4. Flush out your system by drinking plenty of water.

5. Avoid synthetic underwear because it traps perspiration, hence smell.

If it is not a smelly vagina you have, but one that is irritated, dry with vaginal bumps then several reasons can be held accountable.

Other than cotton material worn around the genitals can be a cause. Wear cotton knickers/briefs, this is a completely natural fabric which will react least negatively with your body. It gives the area breathing space which prevents the possibility of sweat build up known for causing vaginal bumps. Have your GP ascertain the vaginal bumps as they are easily confused with heat boils. If you believe them to be genital bumps apply cool yogurt to the area twice daily for about three days. Alternately, apply a sandalwood and rose water paste as treatment.

Using bathroom smellies to treat a smelly vagina is out of the question, it adds to your problem bringing itch, burning or stinging, and leaves the vagina smelling flowery, this is not good girls.

Natural vaginal odor will turn a red hot blooded male into a red hot "sizzling" blooded male.

In a previous article, relating to the opposite sex, I explained the importance of leaving what is natural alone in the words below, to make it clear to girls on the pull. The natural scent of a woman's vagina is an erotic aroma that turns men on. Just think dog and bitch. The bitch doesn't have sprayed genitals.  Dogs don't hunt the bitch with a scented scent.

Did you know when you treat your own vaginal infection you rid vaginal odour at the same time.

Hi Me, from what you say it sounds pretty much like BV which brings odor more so after sex. If the odor is a type of fishy smell then we certainly link this to bacterial vaginosis as well, but you say nothing of this. Women differ and so do symptoms of different types of infection so its hard to say the exact cause at this point if it is infection. You mention no discomforts. If this is worrying you then pop along to your GP so he can sort matters after determining the true problem

Hi whats there to be embarrassed about, okay so you have a vaginal odour and apparently a problem with an all over odour as well. A lot of things can cause this to happen. If its a sweaty smell then we know profuse sweating be the cause, and from  something like this we would know how to treat it, but it seems your odours are different and therefore have no clue to the cause.

The vaginal odor can be caused by infection etc. The list is endlless for odours occurring in people. I am afraid it sounds that you had best hide your blushes and speak with your GP as you might need a specific treatment to cure you of this body odour that your ordinary soap and water and deodorant can't remove.

Please dont put up with the discomfort anymore and talk to your doctor. If its down to your diet then your doctor will recognize this and give you expert advise on what to do. Stop worrying and just get it sorted.

Hello

I have the answer to this problem. First, if the smell is from within the vigina, go see a doctor, if the smell is from the outside i.e. the vigina lips then this advice will help you. Some facts about the vigina and then onto the cure. On and around the lips of a womans vigina and on the shaft and around the head of a mans penis ( I have heard that men suffer from smelly penis also ) there are glands called sebaceous glands that secrete an oily, waxy substance called sebum that is made of fat, wax, and the debris of dead fat-producing cells that help fight bacteria and any harmful germs. Sebum is odorless, but its bacterial breakdown can produce very strong odors. Sebum acts to protect and waterproof hair and skin, and keeps them from becoming dry, brittle and cracked by dehydration. It can also inhibit the growth of some microorganisms on the skin also. The activity of the sebaceous glands increases during puberty because of heightened levels of androgens. This is however normal, not to be confused with an STD. When the ph level of the vigina and penis is off balance from using strong soaps or other washing products they strip the vigina or penis of the bodys natual waxy defence and then the body thinks it's under attack from germs so it produces more of the waxy substance (that's the thick cheesy stuff on the penis and on the vigina lips that has a very strong smell) and then with the harmful soap and other washing products the sebum fights the chemicals and the breakdown of these is what causes the very bad smell. You are not ment to wash the head of the penis or the vigina lips with anything other than warm water and something with a ph of 7.0. even with a ph of 7.0 I have found that there still is a slight smell but with a substitute soap there is NO smell at all. You wash at the start 3 times a day, once in the morning, the evening and once at night for a week then to twice a day for one week then you can just wash your penis or vigina every morning and there will be no smell. The product that I use and has been the only thing that works for me (NO SMELL AT ALL) is called Dermol 500 lotion, it's a substitute soap and you wash really well around the area and you make sure that you thoroughly rinse off the lotion and thats all you need to do. It's a bit expensive £15 but really worth it for peace of mind and it lasts soo long as you don't have to use much at all. The lotion has 500ml in it. I think you can get it delivered to your door if there is no shops that sell it near you. Please come back and share to other people that it works when it works for you because I know it has been a relief to me. Please even look it up on the net. Sorry about the long post. I will spread the word as it has taken me a while to find the cure.

I went camping a few months ago and could bare to use the showers so I went about a week without. After I got home I noticed this bump right next to my clit. I was worried but in a few days it was gone. Last week we went camping in a different spot, again a week without showering and the bump is back. Is it a coincidence or can that be why I have the bump? I know it sounds gross but if you seen those showers you'd do without too.

I have never had sex so there's no std's and I have no health insurance so no ob. Thanks for your help.
