Today Pope Benedict XVI took a fall but not one caused by tripping over his robe or something that blocked his way, but by the hand of a deranged woman. After he was felled he managed to get to his feet, a little shaken but not enough to stop him from continuing with Christmas Eve mass. Whats that saying "When in Rome do as the romans do." This is one thing you don't do and that's to push a man of the cloth to the floor.

An "unbalanced woman" scaled the barriers in St. Peter's Basilica and knocked Pope Benedict XVI over as he walked down the main aisle to the altar to begin saying Christmas Eve Mass.

Not only was it the pope who took a blow that caused him to topple over but Cardinal Roger Etchegaray took a tumble too.

Television images showed a woman dressed in red lunge toward Pope Benedict as he started to walk up the central aisle. Police and bodyguards scrambled to the aid of the 82-year-old pope, however they were evidently not quick enough to stop the fall and more scarily prevent it. The crazed woman could have been carrying a knife or other, then what. It makes you shudder to think how serious this could have been for the pope and the Cardinal.Vatican police took the woman in for questioning, and Cardinal Etchegaray was taken to the emergency room for a checkup. Although both men a little shaken from their experience they carried on regardless. The worrying thing about something like this happening is the after shock.

It is believed the assailant did not appear to have "malicious intentions, nonetheless she could have which is frightening. It makes you question if the security in practice was properly planned and organized.

Last year the same thing happened involving a woman who police stopped from lurching forward at the pope as he left Basilica. There has been no news given on this to say this is the same woman involved in this incident on Christmas Eve when both the Pope and Cardinal Roger Etchegaray were struck leading to them taking a fall.

The incident in St. Peter's was the second high-profile security breach in Italy in the last 4 weeks. This is quite alarming and frigtening to say the least. Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi was hospitalized after a man with mental problems attacked him striking him in the face with a heavy statue of the Milan cathedral, breaking his nose and two teeth at a campaign rally in Milan. The Prime minister is lucky to have escaped with his life.

During Christmas Eve Mass, the pope appeared tired, and looked gaunt at times, but celebrated the ritual without incident. The Pope is strong but age has him feeble, and falls like this would naturally take their toll, and especially ones forced by an attacker which could have led to more serious consequences. Let us pray for the Pope that this incident won't have any affect on him or the Cardinal at a later date.

Today Christmas Eve is the first time in recent memory, that Christmas Eve Mass was said at 10 p.m. instead of midnight, in what Father Lombardi said was an effort to protect Benedict and help save his strength for his intense schedule over the festive season. I don't think his parishners will mind as they understand that the pope is not getting any younger.

Benedict is said to be in generally good health, but who can say that it will remain this way after his traumatic ordeal he suffered today that brought Pope Benedict XVI to his knees, and not to say his prayers. It was not long back that Pope Benedict took a tumble and and broke his wrist at the house in northern Italy where he was spending his summer holiday. There are only so many knocks a person can take and when you're a good age like the pope then one knock can be one to many.

Are you depressed this Christmas if so get treatment before it turns into Chronic Depression
