Is having an itchy bum, not only causing you embarrassment but getting you down too. Is there not a day goes by that you find yourself in awkward situations all because you need to scratch your bottom. Well you are not alone. More men and women than you can imagine suffer from anal itching.
The condition linked to an itchy bum is called Pruritus Ani. There can be many reasons for it developing. One regular cause is excessive moisture in and around the anal region. Moisture may be sweat or come from loose stool particles. Pruritis ani may be a symptom of other anal problems such as haemorrhoids and anal fissures. The main symptom (itch) impels the patient to scratch which is not good measure, as it can worsen the condition due to possible tearing of the skin through aggravation to relieve the discomfort. Also vigorous cleansing of the genitals or using too much topical treatments can cause issues.
Some folk have to keep their diet in check because particular foods may cause them to suffer from pruritus ani. Smoking tobacco products and drinking alcohol, especially beer and wine are other likely causes of the condition in people.
Foods and drinks to avoid
- Coffee, Tea
- Carbonated beverages
- Dairy products, milk etc
- Tomatoes products and Ketchup
- Cheese
- Chocolate. Not something everyone likes to give up but you can always cure a sweet too by eating juicy sweet fruit, but the matter of an itchy bum will not go away if you continue eating bars of chocolate
- Nuts
Pruritus Ani does not make you a dirty person. People with the condition tend to wash the area vigorously and often with soap, this will not rid the problem. In fact it can make matters worse by damaging the skin and removing protective natural oils.
To help make the itching go away a close examination by a colon or rectal surgeon will look for the definite cause for the itching. If Pruritus Ani is diagnosed then appropriate treatment will be prescribed.
Self help tips to prevent pruritus ani
- Not allow moisture to settle in and around the anal area:
- Keep the area dry by using strips of cotton or 4 x 4 gauze or some cornstarch powder
- Do not use medicated, scented products and deodorant powders.
- Use only water to clean the anus.
- Don't rub the anus with toilet paper but gently glide it over, if grime is not moving then bathe it off with warm water then rinse, and rinse again if necessary and pat dry. Use wet toilet paper, baby wipes or a flannel to blot the area clean.
- People who find they scratch their bum more at night time should consider wearing socks on the hands or soft gloves.
Because we mentioned sweat being a problem and if you happen to be a person who sweats a lot around the genitals then you have to pay more attention to preventing any profuse sweating. Look at what could be causing your sweaty bum and deal with it.
When you feel your bum becoming slightly greasy then wash it. Don't allow it to build up because sweat after time will bring odor. Its also not nice, and neither comfortable to have that slithery feel in the crack of the anus.
Avoid a sweaty bottom
- Wear underwear made of cotton
- Try out tactical high-tech poly underwear, the kind worn by athletes.
- Lightly dust round the genitals with talcum powder or cornstarch.
- Use warm water to clean the genitals, and a little unscented soap if necessary to clean pubic hair and remove any cling on poo left behind after opening you're bowels.
- Use medicated wipes instead of toilet tissue to clean your bum. Choose alcohol free wipes and ones that flush away.

Top-level comments on this article: (1 total)Itching and pain be gone! I found a solution to Anal Itch in the Bathroom Bidet Sprayers they use in Thailand. Every doctor will tell you that you need to clean but the key is you need to do it without irritating the skin. Difficult to accomplish when you have an itch that is just begging to be scratched. But cleaning with a water spray does just that and it is easy, convenient and no one need know what you are using it for. Toilet paper irritates the skin and the more you rub, the more you itch. I bought mine at bathroomsprayers installed it myself. Thanks Jeff good info
