Have you got bad breath? Is it costing you a fortune in mouthwash and peppermint chewing gum to try and cover the smell? If you have mouth odour and find after cleaning your teeth and even the tongue and the bad breath remains, then it's mostly likely still there because it's caused by a mouth disorder that no amount of mouthwash or Wrigleys chewing will get rid of.

Aside from the obvious reasons for causing bad breath such as certain foods like garlic, onions, curry and other, there is particular mouth diseases/conditions that cause bad breath (halitosis.) Halitosis is usually the result of poor dental health habits and may be a sign of other health concerns.

The way to fight tooth decay and gum disease is to dedicate more time to your mouth and look after it. Some folk think that a quick brush after eating a meal will do the trick in keeping the teeth and gums healthy, well it's not, that's just simply a quick fix if you like. There is a knack to how you should brush your teeth and clean your mouth to keep it 100% healthy. The healthier your teeth and gums are, the less risk you have for tooth decay and gum disease.

Hey guys I know there's nothing more embarrassing as having bad breath when up close to people, but not half as bad for them on the receiving end who have to stand in front of you while you talk the talk..

Bad breath (halitosis) is normally the outcome of the breakdown of proteins by bacteria located in the mouth. But of course this is not just a sole cause for bad breath. There are other reasons for mouth odour that can affect the airways, oesphagus and stomach which in return brings smelly breath.

Issues of the mouth that can lead to bad breath

Issues that can interfere with airways and cause bad breath

It's time to do something about your bad breath when it starts getting serious and interfering with your social life. When you notice people taking a step back from you and avoiding direct contact then this is a sign to say to do something quick, otherwise you could end up a lonely old soul with no friends. You can't fault people for this reaction, you have to try and understand from their point why they are uncomfortable being close up. Put the shoe on the foot and it will help you understand their actions a lot easier.

If you frequently have a bad taste in your mouth and you spot a white or yellow film on your tongue, why leave it and suffer when you can cure it and suffer no more, and neither will your friends have to either. If no oral cause can be recognized by the dentist for your bad breath, you might have to attend a dental clinic that specialises in breath smells.

Self help for bad breath?

Look after your mouth like you would any other part of the body that needs regular maintenance; Keep a high level of oral and dental hygiene. Brush the teeth 3 times a day or after food. Not forgetting to clean between the teeth using dental floss, woodsticks or an inter-dental brush as suggested by dental experts to remove stubborn foods stuck in-between the teeth.

Don't forget the tongue. This is essential for keeping your breath fresh. Use a tongue cleaner and clean right to the back of the tongue. Some people like to lightly brush over the top of the tongue with a soft bristle tooth brush

By all means use a mouthwash. The best time to use mouthwash is before going to bed. This doesn't mean you can't use it during the day,

Drink plenty of fluids, cut down on coffee and tea. Drinks as such and tobacco products cause tooth stains turning them yellow or brown.

If your mouth tends to feel dry a lot then chew sugar-free gum.

Eat fresh fruit instead of sticky toffee and chocolate, and add plenty of fibrous vegetables into your diet.

The best way to keep on top of your teeth and gums is to visit your dentist regularly.

Gingivitis

Have you just learned that you have gingivitis? Gingivitis is mild type of gum disease with inflammation of the gum. Signs of the condition usually show red gums rather than pink, inflamed, swollen and bleeding gums after contact with a tooth brush. Gingivitis is chiefly caused by poor oral hygiene. Plaque has to go, it's a gooey matter made up of bacteria and builds up in the teeth. The bacteria release toxins that irritate the gums.

Gingivitis begins with a buildup of plaque - an unseen gooey film made up generally of bacteria. When starches and sugars in the food we eat interact with the bacteria then plaque is usually imminent.. Regular brushing and flossing will help remove plaque.

Risk factors for gum disease

Symptoms of gum disease or gingivitis

If If you suffer any of the above symptoms listed then go and see your dentist. If certain mouth
IIdiseases/disorders are left untreated then it can lead to you losing your teeth. It's all well and good  gthinking this sort of thing only happens to other people, well it doesn't, and its only a  matter of time if if you ignore a dental issue of this nature, or just in general ignore your mouth then you will have no t  teeth to keep clean.

Excellent and well researched article.
As a student doing his Bachelor's in Dentistry I feel you have covered nearly everything from an everyday/common perspective and the best course of action as you have mentioned for such long standing cases of Halitosis, is going to a Dentist which; I highly agree. Great job !
