Household tips and spring cleaning ideas to help save you time and money. Are you an eager beaver and raring to go? Have you already planned for the big spring clean and got everything in order and stocked up (furniture polish duster, disinfectant, bleach, brush, mop and other.) Well you're not on your own. Spring cleaning the house from top to bottom is a major chore and one that can take a lot out of you. It can take its toll leaving you with aching bones; feeling tired near to exhaustion and most likely cause a headache as well. To avoid this then clean one room at a time. It will also ensure the job getting done by focusing on one area at a time. Having more than two or three jobs on the go at once is not good practice. It's all too easy to rush off from cleaning the lounge to take the bedding from the washing machine to peg out on the line; only to not return to finish what you first started. Number each room and spring clean each one accordingly.
Plan your spring clean so you don't end up more busy than necessary
If a full blitz on the house is on the cards it will take up a lot of your time so prepare and be ready. It's every woman's worst nightmare after pinning up her hair putting on her apron only to find that the Hoover is in need of a new dust bag which she doesn't have, or the washing machine door won't open because it's jammed again. Make sure all cleaning tools and electrical appliances are in working order before you start your spring clean.
Let's look at ways to lighten the load so the spring clean is less troublesome, and something to look forward to. If your heart isn't in it then it's pointless. You need to be geared up and in the right frame of mind for a great result. Take your time and enjoy, and remember you are not a robot.
Spring cleaning tips to follow that will help reduce the amount of elbow grease you would normally need and put a few bob back in your pocket. Get in the mood and open all windows. Not only will this let fresh air in it will help you cool down when you work up a sweat.
1. Start at the top and work down when dusting. If the Hoover is broke brush before you dust. Have all cleaning equipment and tools easily to hand so you don't have to go looking for stuff. There is every possibility if this happens you could get side tracked in to putting the kettle on and your feet up, and promising to finish the job tomorrow.
2. If you're cleaning carpets with this spring clean sprinkle baking soda onto them and leave over night to absorb musty odours. To clean candle wax off a carpet/upholstery use an absorbent cloth and place over the wax stain and then press a hot iron on top. Spray shaving cream on greasy marks then vacuum.
3. Rip up an old T shirt and use for rags or use old socks on your hands for cleaning ground in dirt from grimy wood work.
4. Wash shelves with soapy water and any ornaments that stood on them let soak in another bowl of soapy water till the cleaned area is dry and been polished.
5. To get rid of scuff marks off the floor, rub with an eraser.
6. Be wary about mixing cleaning agents. Ammonia and bleach are toxic.
7. Clean dull smeared mirrors with alcohol and specific bathroom fixtures.
8. Use white vinegar on glass shower doors for that gleaming sparkle
9. Mix a solution of 1/2 cup vinegar, 1 cup ammonia, and 1/4 cup baking soda added to one gallon of tepid water will clean the shower itself.
10. To rid water spots on metal frames use lemon furniture oil.
11. Reduce hard scrubbing in the bathroom by running the shower or bath on hot for several minutes so the steam can loosen dirt and grime.
12. 2 tablespoons chlorine bleach in one quart of water will clean grout effectively. Allow to dry and apply a couple of coats of lemon oil. Let the first application dry before the next coat.
13. Diluted vinegar and water will bring dull walls up bright and clean
14. An open container of baking soda placed inside the fridge will absorb smells as will a couple of drops of vanilla extract on a piece of cotton will do the same trick also.
15. Rub the refrigerator down with vinegar to prevent mildew.
16. To prevent kitchen appliances from yellowing mix 1/2 cup bleach, 1/4 cup baking soda and 4 cups of warm water. Always dry surface afterwards. Car wax is ideal for shine and covering small scratches.
17. Add 1/2 cup of white vinegar in 1 gallon of warm water to use as the perfect floor cleaner.
18. Wooden and laminated floors are easily damaged by grit. Give fireside rugs and mats a strict hoovering and hang over the line and beat excess dust and grit out, All grit has to go because it can dislodge and stick in someone's shoe hence scratching the wooden floor. Protect wooden and laminate flooring by using special felt covered castors on furniture.
19. Vinyl Floors don't take much upkeep other than just sweeping and mopping with warm soapy water.
Bounce into action with bounce. Are we on about the same thing the stuff you use in the dryer? Yes it has many useful qualities other than using it solely in the tumble drier.
20. Bounce is created to help eliminate static cling, so wipe your television screen with a used sheet.
21. Place an unused sheet in a drawer in the wardrobe if you want it to smell nice and fresh. Also a good idea is to put one in a suitcase while not in use.
22. Keep one in the car to use as an air freshener
23. Throw a couple of sheets into a kitchen waste basket to eliminate odours
24. If you keep pets then to rid pet hairs rub with a sheet which will magnetically attract loose hairs.
25. Wipe venetian blinds with a sheet to remove dust and help prevent it from resetting.
26. Does your shoes smell, if so place a sheet in each shoe?

- Empty toilet paper roll holders are great for storing electrical cords. It keeps them tidy
and you can label the roll to what appliance it belongs if using an adapter for several gadgets.
- Have the kids gone mad with the crayons again. To remove crayon marks on walls wet a cloth with baking soda. Use alcohol for permanent marker on appliances or counter tops.
- A little hydrogen peroxide will remove blood off clothes.
- Aside from behind the ears rub some fragrance on the light bulb to create a
scent in the room.
- Store candles in the freezer they will last a lot longer
- Cover celery in tin foil before refrigerating it will keep longer.
- Freeze left over wine into ice cubes for use in casseroles and sauces.
- Shine windows using old newspaper.
