Rhythm method - what has happened to the contraceptive pill that was once one of the most common forms of contraception as well as the condom? Thankfully they still are, however some teens are now turning to the rhythm method when having sex to prevent pregnancy
Today a vast growing number of teen girls say they use the rhythm method for birth control, and more teens also think its fine for single girls to have a baby, according to a government survey. The outcome of the survey tells us this is why the teen pregnancy rate is no longer decreasing in number like it was.
What is the rhythm method? It is one of the first fertility awareness methods to be practiced by a great number of women before a lot of other contraceptive methods we have become familiar with over the years were put on the market. It is one of the oldest methods of natural birth control. Sadly, it is not necessarily the most reliable method for preventing a pregnancy from happening. And this is why young girls who are not looking to fall pregnant are best considering another method of birth control that at least gives you a 99 percent guarantee of preventing an unwanted pregnancy
Theory and practice: The rhythm method is based on 3 ideas. The first one is that women ovulate fourteen days before their period starts give or take a couple of days. The second idea is that sperm can survive inside the vagina for up to 3 days. And thirdly that an egg can only be fertilized within 24 hours of freeing itself from the ovaries
Using these three ideas, a calendar was created, starting the first day of a woman's menstrual cycle, the day that her period begins. The female is considered fertile from the time her period ends until four or five days after she ovulates, usually around day 19. From day 20 until she begins her period again, she is infertile and cannot get pregnant. It has been said by one social scientist at the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics that the rhythm method doesn't work about 25% of the time.
When you hear advice like this coming from someone that knows what they are talking about then it would be wise to listen because this way you avoid falling in the 25% group. The condom should be considered at all times as it helps prevent STDs
