What to do if you have a red, sore itchy penis. First you need to know why it is in the state it is. If you are like most blokes then it is a good chance you will have already made an assumption, and maybe even scared witless that it is something serious. Guys tend to worry when their willy develops a scab or they see discharge coming from their penis after having unprotected sex. You have to ask yourself if it is worth all the misery so wear a condom.
If the head of your penis (glans) is swollen and red, the cause could be balanitis. Balanitis is a Greek word meaning inflammation of the acorn'. The look of balanitis can give the impression that something nasty has taken hold of your genitals however it might pay you to remember, just because something is not pretty to look at, does not mean it cannot be cured. Balanitis is treatable.
Balanitis can be the outcome of poor hygiene, not meaning you do not wash your genitals, you maybe just going about it the wrong way.
Some men rend to give their penis a quick dip, but if under the foreskin is not bathed a cheesy material called smegma builds up which then can become infected and cause irritation.
A mild bout of balanitis can occur after sexual intercourse, but usually gone in less than 24 hours. Most of the time when this happens after sex the cause could be an allergy to thrush if the female has an infected vagina.
Balanitis can also be caused by skin disease, such as psoriasis. Psoriasis can happen on the penis without it affecting any other part of the body. If psoriasis affects the head of the penis then the typical look is red and shiny unlike the usual silvery scaly type found on other body parts. Regular treatment such as antifungal solutions will be useless and likely swapped for steroid cream.
To get to the bottom of why your penis is red itchy and sore is to check your soap and shower gel. Sensitivity to perfumes in soaps and detergents can encourage balanitis.
A lot of men have got so worked up over this penis problem that they have felt like taking a scrubbing brush to their bits in an attempt to cleanse, and will use any old product to make sure the job is done properly, bad move. Using disinfectant or other should be avoided as it is irritating.
There is also the matter of male thrush which can cause the penis to swell, become itchy and turn red. Not common but occasionally, this can be the first sign of diabetes. If ever you doubt something is not right then have your doctor check you over.
Medication for male thrush is just like what women have (antifungal cream or tablets).
What to do about balanitis
- Use unscented products to wash the genitals. Alternatively, buy aqueous cream' from a chemist and use it as body-wash cream.
- Add salt to bath water, and nothing more
- Avoid biological or enzyme' detergents when washing underwear
- Have a chat with your sexual partner if balanitis happens after sex. Suggest she visits her doctor or a genitourinary medicine clinic to check for the thrush infection.
Wash the penis regular but do not go over the top. Too much washing is not good, and if you do not wash enough is not good either. I am afraid only you can be the judge.
It is unhealthy to get anything under the foreskin other than water.
Is that it you ask? Yes; it is as simple as that so there is no excuse for poor genital health in the way of hygiene. Be vigilant with your penis and scrotum. Make time to check your testicles for lumps.
Suffering from male thrush or is swollen testicles more your concern
