Boxer Gary Mason has been killed while riding his bicycle in Sandy Lane South , Wallington, on Thursday morning. It’s been reported the boxer was involved in a collision with a white van.

Before his untimely death, Gary Mason had an amazing run in his time in the boxing ring and fought between 1984 and 1994, with 37 wins to his name. His only defeat was when fighting the world heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis. Gary Mason was British champion from January 1989 to March 1991 when he lost to Lennox Lewis. It was this fight that ended Mason's career as a boxer.

A lot of people today and especially those who followed the champ throughout his boxing career are deeply saddened by his death. Folk are finding it hard to come to terms with how he died and that that his passing was shockingly unexpectedly

The ex British boxing champion Gary Mason was only 48. The retired boxer was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Police are questioning a man they arrested and who they believe is responsible for the accident that left the fighter fatally injured. He was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and bailed until March pending further inquiries. The 43-year-old man in question, who was driving a white Vauxhall "combi" van, had stopped at the scene till the traffic police arrived.

“I had a lot of respect for the guy and gutted about his death, particularly the circumstances of how it happened,” said fighter Frank Bruno former world heavyweight boxing champion.

A post-mortem will be held on Gary Mason’s body at St Helier Hospital mortuary and an inquest will be opened at Croydon Coroner's Court.
