The golfer had been having health problems as of late, but last night his health had dramatically deteriorated. Ballesteros was 54 years old. It’s a very sad time for friends and family who less than 24 hours ago knew his life hung in the balance after he collapsed at Madrid Airport…losing consciousness.  He was rushed to hospital and later died. The five-time major winner in his couple of years of ailing had four operations to remove the tumour as well as undergoing chemotherapy.

Tennis champion Rafael Nadal described Seve Ballesteros as a "reference point" for Spanish athletes.Remembering Seve Ballesteros, "He's one of the greatest golfers of this country."

Through out his career the golfer faced many tough challenges, but none as tough as this one said the Spaniard. Ballesteros called his battle against the tumour the "hardest challenge of my life."

People involved with the world of sport this day mourn the loss of one of the worlds greatest all time golfers. Ballesteros, who claimed 87 titles during his career, won the Open in 1979, 1984 and 1988 which led to the Spaniard becoming the first European to win the Augusta Masters in 1980, repeating the feat in 1983.

His time on the green showed a man with true talent. He was admired by millions the world over. His success scaled to great heights. The man we all loved and lost enjoyed a successful Ryder Cup career as both player and captain - playing in eight Ryder Cups and winning 20 points from 37 matches before leading Europeto victory over the United States at Valderrama in 1997.

Ballesteros was born in Pedrena Cantabria Spain. He learned how to play golf while playing on the beaches near his home while wagging school, chiefly using a 3-iron given to him by one of his brothers.  Golf was not a sport new to him as it run in the family. His uncle Ramon Sota was a Spanish professional champion four times and finished sixth in The Masters in 1965.

Severiano's older brother Manuel finished in the top 100 on the European Tour order of merit every year from 1972 to 1983, and was later to become the golfers manager. Brothers Vicente and Baldomero, and nephew Raúl were also professional golfers.

In May 2009 not long after surgery he appeared in public for the first time after taking time out to support his local football team “Racing Santander” where he was given a standing ovation.
