Derek Boogaard has been found dead. The New York Rangers death at the age of 28 has shocked those close to him and the hockey community. Word has it that his body was found by his brother in his Minneapolis apartment at 6:10 p.m.local time.

News travels fast and so does gossip. Questions are being asked on how a young healthy strapping guy can just drop dead.  An autopsy is scheduled to determine the true cause of his death, but in the meantime rumor continues in the community that he died as a result of the serious concussion he suffered in a Dec. 9 fight with Matt Carkner of the Ottawa Senators that limited his first season with the New York Rangers to 22 games.

Michael Russo of the Star Tribune said this is not the time for armchair neurology or psychology; it's time for grieving, which is what Boogaard's fans, friends and peers in the NHL have been doing since the news of his passing broke out on Friday evening.

One tribute from a friend of Boogaard's that currently works for an NHL team said: I have known Derek for over 6 years; he was a brilliant bloke always smiling. He was a hard worker. He thought all practices for him were mandatory and never took for granted that he was an NHL player. What was great about Derek Boogaard while he was alive was how much time he dedicated to helping charities.

The guy they once called “Boogie Man" is dead. Boogaard is survived by his mother, Joanne, father, Len, and younger sister, Krysten, a basketball player at the Universityof Kansas, and older brother Ryan, a Royal Canadian Mountie in Saskatchewan. The six-foot-seven gentle giant had planned to spend his summer in Minneapolis after a trying first season in New York. Sadly now will that plan of his never unfold.

The cause of Derek Boogaard’s death is pending tests by The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's office in Minnesota, so until then let us not jump to conclusions. Boogaard is the second member of the Rangers family to die suddenly in recent years. Three years ago Russian winger Alexei Cherepanov, the club's first-round pick in 2007, collapsed and died during a Kontinental Hockey League game with Avangard Omsk.

Can we ever forget this guy? No, he made sure of that by leaving his mark. During his 277 career games, he recorded three goals, 13 assists and 589 penalty minutes, that’s not something you forget that easy.
