Summer Vacation-Benllech Field v Florida 5 Star Hotel-Camping With Bunnies Beats Sleeping With Crocs

Which was my favorite summer vacation? Now let me think. Having to choose out of the many holidays I’ve had is proving to be more difficult than I thought. Every foreign country I visited had something special to offer, leaving me with fond memories of the time spent there, and this is the reason why I’m struggling to name one place in particular.

You’d think because I traveled several times to Florida, the Caribbean, the Greek Islands, not to mention every part of Spain, Portugal, Canary Islands, Tunisia, Cyprus, Turkey, and other places, that it’d be one of these destinations at the top of the list of my best summer holiday vacation. Admittingly staying in plush hotels across the world had its perks, but, no 5 star accommodation could compete with sleeping under the stars in an open field with a just a tent for shelter.

Would I choose camping in the UK over Florida?

I have great memories of Florida because my son got married there. I even remember saying before the surprise wedding was sprung on me, that I’d never do another 9 hour flight to America, but what choice did I have, my son was getting married and I needed to be there.

I wanted to be there if I’m honest to make sure he’d turn up for the service otherwise he was never going to leave home. (Lol) I like the best of both worlds, and even if my tent did fit in my hand luggage, I’m not sure sleeping out in the open with crocs is a good idea, its bad enough in the UK having to shoo away bunny rabbits and hedgehogs.

Best UK summer location “Benllech.”

This was my first camping trip and not sure what to expect. Was I having second thoughts about roughing it? Not on your Nellie…this is me Kacy remember.

Everyone had agreed to pitch the tents on a cliff top over looking a beautiful bay in a place called Benllech in Wales. Was I prepared for the time ahead; well I thought I was after borrowing a tent at short notice because I didn’t have one of my own. It was a hot sunny day with a slight breeze which made traveling to Wales even more pleasant for the convoy of campers on route.

After a ninety minute drive, there I was standing in a field overlooking the sea which was to be my home for the next few days, the views was breath taking. First things first, so up with the tent. The quicker the canvass shelter was erected the quicker I could boil a pot of water for a hot drink.  It was a mission, believe me. The slight breeze on flat ground wasn’t that anymore when up high on a cliff top, which made pitching the tent very awkward.

The wind was strong so pinning down the tent was proving to be a task and a half. The canvass flapped noisily and soared as high as a kite at times, making it hard for me to stay on my feet. All I could see was that cliff top and me going over it like a skydiver.

Am I ever going to get this hot drink?

It wasn’t long before two brothers came to the rescue. Both managed to get the canvas steady, but then and much to my horror asked where my tent was. ‘That’s it’ I said. ‘This isn’t a tent it’s a protective shield for a tent in case of bad weather’ one said. Oh well do what you can lads it’s hot and sunny so no need to panic. Come night panic wasn’t the word; the UK was hit with violent thunderstorms. The tent which wasn’t really a tent held me hostage inside because of the lightening. I was scared when the tent poles inside threw off sparks when lightening struck, but my screams went unheard, the thunder made sure of that.

Fellow campers oblivious to my suffering slept through the night in their “TENT”. It was time to go to sleep so I lay down in my sleeping bag and so did the tent too. The tent was so weighted down with water it was inches away from my face. Space was seriously restricted and I thank god I didn’t suffer from claustaphobia, or else I’d have ended up in someone else’s blow up bed on the campsite, whether they liked it or not. Did I manage to sleep, did I heck as like. It was frustrating knowing at any minute the tent could give way.

Nonetheless I weathered the storm so as to speak. What have I learned from this? I learned storms don’t last forever and when the sun comes out camping is great.

Since, I have purchased a 5 man tunnel tent for my next summer vacation. Yes it’s big for one person, and easily could accommodate more people, especially those that might suffer the same plight as me. If this were to happen I’d gladly tell them that they too could get a 5 man tunnel like mine off EBay…Has the water boiled yet?
